Explore the Ancient Spanish Monastery’s Rich History

The history of Florida goes back to the 16th century with Spanish explore Ponce de Leon first stepping foot on what is now known as St. Augustine, but the Ancient Spanish Monastery goes back even further, thanks to the wealth and ingenuity of publishing Mogul William Randolph Hearst. Offering a history that dates back to the 12th century, this historic building is still very much in use today, providing services to a parish that is continually growing, as well as being a local wedding venue. Below, we offer a peek into one of the oldest buildings in the area, showing a depth to Miami Beach that you never realized existed.

Located at 16711 W Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach

In 1925, William Randolph Hearst was responsible for having this ancient stone monastery disassembled, numbered, and packed in over 11,000 boxes and shipped to the United States, where they ended up taking up space in a giant warehouse for over 25 years as Hearst began to experience financial difficulties. Two more enterprising entrepreneurs bought the monastery about a year after Mr. Hearst died and spent the next 19 months of their lives putting together what they called “the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle.” By 1964, yet another multimillionaire, Colonel Robert Pentland Jr., donated the structure to the Bishop of Florida, setting into play a new yet familiar path for the monastery to follow.

Stunning Backdrop for Church Services, Special Events, and Weddings

Today, the parish continues to grow, adding something wonderful to the community as well as providing a peace and serenity that visitors will feel at first sight. Looking much as it must have all those centuries ago, it’s popularity as a wedding venue ensures that it will continue to play a huge part in our state’s future, and although its hours for open vary greatly (We encourage you to explore their website to discover if it will be open for tours during your Miami Beach vacation.), it will definitely be worth a visit. For those thinking of exploring its options as a wedding venue, they offer a choice of chapel wedding or garden wedding and the receptions handled there are always memorable.
